STAYING ALIVE IN THE WOODS

STAYING ALIVE IN THE WOODS

An essential rule to have in mind while you are out in the woods is: You can stay alive three minutes without air, three days without water and three weeks without food. The first thing to do, if you get stuck in the wilderness, is not looking for food- even if you are hungry. Looking for water is more important. But finding clean water is not always that easy.

HOW TO FIND WATER IN THE WILD

It is much easier to find clean water in Scandinavia compared to other countries, but either way it is important to not take any risks. In these situations, even a stomach flu can kill you. If there is no water nearby, you should be aware of the vegetation around you. Deciduous forests and where pine forest turns to spruce can tell that water is close to find. Avoid puddles or other water sources that have been calm for a while. As soon as you find water, you need to boil it for 20 minutes just to make sure it gets clean. If you don’t have the opportunity to boil the water, you can filter it, as the army of Sweden writes about. Your body also needs Vitamin C to stay alive, and that's easy to get by putting pine needles in the boiling water.

Do not forget that you can drink rainwater, but stay away from drinking urine or salt water. Too much salt gives the opposite reaction making your body dehydrated. And do not eat pure snow in the winter. Melt it down instead and do your stomach a favor.

HOW TO FIND FOOD IN THE WILD

If it is hard to find food, you better focus on not getting sweaty or loosing energy. You can survive without food for weeks, so stay calm. But when you start looking for it, plants can be a good first step to make your hunger go away. It is easy to find, includes necessary carbohydrates, fibers and vitamin C and can be eaten raw. But when you are looking for food you need to get away from your cultural thoughts. Even a frog or a snake can be food in survival situations. If you brought your paracord bracelet, you can hang the food in trees to keep it away from animals. But the most fundamental advice to survive is to not loose your will to live. Your psyche has a great influence, so try to stay positive and you will stay alive.
